This article is yet more proof that unscrambling jumbled letters is not easy; in fact it’s VERY difficult. My skill in doing this places me at the bottom of the barrel, so I came here hoping to find a way to intellectual respectability. No such luck. I’m no better prepared to solve such puzzles than I ever was.

I got to thinking about out this when I happened to see an old video in which Dick Cavett talked about his ability to sort out scrambled letters. He said, and I believed him, that he had the curious ability to unscramble piles of letters almost instantly. It was then that I realized that it was futile for me to try to ever be any good at that. You either have it or you don’t. Sure, I could improve, but not to the point that would even partially satisfy me. Maybe I’ll try juggling. That can be learned, instantly unscrambling words can’t.

Agreed on other benefits. (oh… and people are amazing: congratulations, ideas, bug reports, patches, look & feel redesign…)

I have tried some other ad providers, like Chitika (ex-YahooAds) but the revenue was… 3€/month. Google is a monster.

In truth the real benefits from the project are strategic in nature (reputation, networking, tangible demonstration of skill, easy access to a web infrastructure I understand, SEO firepower for other projects). Google Adsense just helps me “live off the land”.

They were the fastest one to set up and seem to have a decent targeting mechanism. I may test an alternate provider later this summer. Their TOS does limit what I can do for ajax refreshes, which limits my impressions to a degree….

i’m sorry but getting 30-35 words per “hand” is not fast…i play this game on an iPhone and can typically do 60 words per minute, garnering a score of about 400 in the first round, and close to 1.5k in the last round with all the triple value word and letter tiles. even then, i get regularly beaten online by both strangers, who i admit, might indeed be using cheats, and my friends, whom do not use cheats.
scramble with friends gives “hands” which has quite a lot of common consonants, like t, s or m, and mixes them with a number of vowels like e. therefore, it is easy to find words by going systematically from consonant to consonant and linking them to vowels around them to form words.

there is a cheat i know of that is on android that i have seen people using, whereby the program finds the words and uses a line that appears on the screen to show the user the word. in this way, the user can easily see what words the finder has found without switching from one screen to the other. however, i don’t know the name of that app, since i don’t use an android…
